Sun, Day of Dylan’s Daydream Doodle

by Tables on December 23, 2018

For today’s post, I present a little flow of consciousness drawing that I did. It’s the first page of the brand new sketchbook that I’d bought. A little icebreaker, if you will. The whole point of a sketchbook is to scratch away at those ideas itching around inside your head. Consider a sketchbook your starting point for bringing those ideas to fruition and draw away. It may even make it easier to pick and choose which ideas and trains of thought to pursue in earnest.

Basically, I wanna do this page again from scratch, BUT COOLER.
Partway through drawing this, it started to look like it would make a decent comic page so I tried adding some kinda narrative element between Jake and Dylan. I may come back to this in some form in the future.
A big book for big ideas.
This house was made from The First Scribble. (I was giving my ballpoint a go)
I dreamy palette, if you will.

What’s that sound? (lettering practice)
Do it for “Social Media”.
Gonna be so tall! So dreamy~

It’s much bigger than the smaller 5×8 Moleskine sketchbook I’ve gotten used to drawing in since I finished college and those 8.5×11/9×12 blackbooks stopped being a basic life requirement. Jake and Dylan are my way of exploring that age old hero/rival dynamic. This was a fun exercise in exploring their relationship.

Fanart Friday: Bowsette~

by Tables on December 21, 2018

Back during that Bowsette craze I tried my hand at my own design for her. I wanted to give the King turned Queen of Koopas a look that was tough and monstrous, but also voluptuous like the many shapely Bowsettes that other artists were drawing at the time.

This was probably one of those early ballpoint drawings that started my descent from pencils.
Her design was a lot of fun to play with. Everyone was so excited all it once to draw this Koopa Princess Queen.

Wed NES: Mage Punk Ablaze

by Tables on December 19, 2018

Back in the month of Halloween I attempted to participate in the age old tradition of Inktober. Of course, I failed miserably; but did I manage to eek out one or two worthwhile illustrations from the whole experience like the Inktober before.

I did three ink drawings and a number of ballpoint pen sketches until around the middle of the month rolled around. The themes I did in ink were Poisonus, Tranquil, Scorched, and Jolt. I’ll post Scorched and Jolt here on these last two Wed Nes days of good ol’ 2018. The last one I’ll put up sometime in January.

Today we have a look at a Fiery Mage Punk Jake for Scorched.

I drew this one and a leftover scrap with the intent of coming back to it to color it with inkwash. As fate would have it, I made many mistakes while working on him and used my Xacto knife to erase them all. I’ll color it in digitally and add it to the gallery later.
He's the shortest character and I drew him too big! I wanted more flame billowing up from his head. Boo!
I learned a lot while working on this. Very happy with how it turned out in the end.
I guess I also kinda sorta wanted the phrase "daddy" to come to mind.
I really wanted Jake to look like he was strong enough to punch through concrete.
Those flames! That X shaped scar is so cool! And his expression? Is it confusing enough?
I also really wanted Jake to look like he could melt through iron.

The preliminary sketch and some progress shots

I posted most, if not all of these, up on my Instagram stories as I was working on it.

My preliminary sketch. The goal here was “small but strong like fiery boulder”.
Muscular! Bare!
Show winning smile here.
Muscular avec Bracelet!

I almost forgot his other bracelet here!
In case you had any questions about Jake’s anatomy, this won’t answer them.
The purple isn’t as purple as I wanted it to be.

Halfway there!
Planning out his waist cloak.
Testing out inks.

This was where I attempted to invoke forces of questionable origins in an attempt to make Jake as lit as possible.

All in All, Not Bad for one of the more unforgiving art mediums.

As for those ballpoint pen drawings, none of them actually count to me because pen and ink is a point of personal pride with me (as my top favorite medium).

Next week we’ll have a look at our best boy Olin, for Jolt, to cap out the year.

Sunday Fundays: Punk Pyro, Jake Fox

by Tables on December 16, 2018

This drawing isn’t necessarily old but it is from earlier in the year so it’s not the most recent thing in the world either. I have a few stacks of drawings lying about my desk of stuff I’ve scribbled out throughout the year. I’ve finally made some time to shoot, edit, and upload a few photos of some of them.

Instead of putting them up in one massive post, I wanna queue them out on an update schedule I’ve already failed to abide by on several occasions. I’ll describe said schedule in a later post.

For now, please enjoy this maniacal looking Jake that I drew.

If I ever came back to this I'd probably paint over and redraw his head in the middle. I wasn't using paint markers like I do currently. [12:16 AM 12/16/18]
Started drawing with ballpoint pen again so I wouldn’t be able to back out of any design choices that I made. Historically, I think I’ve always been pretty bad about “filling the page”.

Not quite sure how old these are but I happened to have them scanned and uploaded.

Enjoy!

Mundane Moonday I; On Wednesday: Work Logs I

by Tables on December 11, 2018

I was going to post this on Monday yesterday, but The Universe ™ did everything that it could to stop me; sure enough, it succeeded.

Earlier this year, I made an attempt at logging the actual time that I’m able to work on projects. I think I was doing a fairly decent job until before the task fell by the wayside.

I initially kept up with the logs by hand before I switched over to a now long-ish note in Google Keep. I’ve posted them below starting with most recent logs at the top.

The format is:
[Date]
[Project]
[Location]
[Start Time]
[End Time]
[Reason for stopping (Not always logged)]

Throwback Thursday: 1 and 5 Years?

by Tables on December 6, 2018

Let’s try posting a few of these on a biweekly basis. It’s no exaggeration to say I’m disastrously behind on my posting game so this is an attempt at turning a weakness into an advantage. Let’s see how it goes.

From 1 year ago

I was feeling out some brush tip sharpies a la prima on a scrap piece of ½” thick foam board. I did a finished version on Bristol shortly after but I can’t find it anywhere!

And here are some sketchbook pages from 5 years ago.

I started this sketchbook shortly after graduating AIFL. I’ll mostly be posting from this book for a good while.

Some stream of consciousness blurb about the beginning of Existence, Jake’s Mom, and a very squiggly and angry goomba.
Some more squiggles and Private Investigator Kandi “Jack” Nobel.
Feeling out the Mage Punk logo the good old fashion way.

Planning Ahead

While putting this post together I started thinking about going through my old books and divying out pages from them throughout every other Thursday next year starting from the first.

It’s entirely possible I’m overthinking my Thursdays but that probably just means that overthinking is really my aesthetic. Unfortunately, my room is a mess and until that mystery is figured out, I think I’ll just queue up posts and hope for the best.
